Why We Stopped Bleaching Our Collagen

Why We Stopped Bleaching Our Collagen

If you've opened a new tub of By Beth recently, you might have noticed it looks a little different. It's a touch warmer in colour, more cream than stark white.

That's on purpose, and I want to tell you why.

What I found out

Recently I found out something I didn't love. To get collagen that bright white colour, it's often bleached during processing. That included ours, and I'm sorry to say I didn't know.

It's common practice across the supplement industry, and not just in collagen. A bright white powder looks clean, so it's become what we expect a "pure" supplement to look like.

But a powder that looks clean and a powder that actually is clean aren't the same thing.

Why I changed it

By Beth has always had one rule: nothing in the tub that doesn't need to be there. No fillers, no flavours, no sugars or sugar alcohols. Just one ingredient.

Bleaching a powder only to make it look prettier doesn't fit that rule. It's an extra step that does nothing for you. It's purely cosmetic.

So once I knew, the decision was easy. We moved to an unbleached collagen.

The Original is now 100% Hydrolysed Bovine Collagen. Unbleached.

What you'll notice

  • A warmer, creamier colour. This is what collagen looks like without the bleaching step.
  • A mild, natural taste in plain water. If you mix it into a glass of water on its own, you may notice a soft, natural flavour.
  • In your coffee, tea or smoothie? Nothing. It still dissolves easily and disappears into your daily drink, exactly as before.

What hasn't changed

  • The same single ingredient: hydrolysed bovine collagen, Types I & III
  • Ethically sourced from grass-fed, pasture-raised Australian cattle
  • The same one teaspoon (2g) a day
  • Nothing added. And now, nothing bleached.

Real isn't always perfectly white

So much of the wellness industry is built on how things look. Bright colours, perfect powders, products designed to photograph well.

I'd rather give you something that's real.

Real food isn't uniform. Real ingredients vary a little from batch to batch. And real collagen isn't always perfectly white. It's exactly what it's meant to be.

My tip

If you've been taking your collagen in plain water and you'd prefer not to taste it at all, try it in your morning coffee, a cup of tea or a smoothie. That's where it disappears completely.

And if you have any questions, or you just want to tell me what you think, email me at beth@bybeth.com. I read every one.
