By Beth FAQs

What is collagen and why is it so important?

The most abundant protein in the body, collagen has many vital functions including giving the skin structure, strength and elasticity. Starting in our 20s, we rapidly begin to lose our natural supply of it each year - resulting in visible signs of ageing. Sun exposure, smoking and alcohol consumption can accelerate this breakdown even further. Ingestible collagen provides the protein in hydrolysed form - meaning it is broken down into smaller units, including amino acids and peptides, which are easily digested and distributed throughout the body and skin.

What are thebenefits of ingestible collagen?

Ingestible collagen is clinically proven to hydrate and plump the skin, reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles, and improve skin elasticity and density. It also strengthens hair and nails, promotes growth, and improves thinning and brittleness. Along with these beauty benefits, studies show it contributes to overall gut health by improving the intestinal barrier and preventing leaky gut.

What type ofcollagen does By Beth use?

All of our formulations use bovine collagen sourced from pasture-raised, grass-fed Australian cattle.

Why bovine collagen?

Generally speaking, there are two types of collagen on the market: marine (derived from fish skin and fish scales) and bovine (derived from cow hides). We use bovine collagen because we believe it is of a higher quality and has a more traceable supply chain. Bovine collagen is more compatible with the human body than marine collagen. It is also rich in both Type I collagen (the most abundant collagen found in the human body) and Type III collagen (the second most abundant collagen), whereas marine collagen only contains Type I collagen. Bovine collagen is rich in amino acids: glycine, proline and hydroxyproline and contains 14% more proline and 41% more hydroxyproline than marine collagen, as well as helping to produce creatine, which is beneficial for building muscle. It has little to no taste, whereas marine collagen can have a fishy taste. Our collagen is premium food grade and contains no fat, carbs, sugar or lactose.

Where is the collagen sourced?

All of our collagen is ethically sourced from pasture-raised, grass-fed Australian cattle. Australia has a global reputation for clean and green cattle farming, backed by strict quality controls and best practice systems in traceability, food safety and sustainability. In instances where there are shortages in Australian collagen (due to reasons posed by our harsh climate, such as drought), we supplement our supply with collagen sourced from pasture-raised, grass-fed New Zealand cattle. In line with our commitment to constant betterment, we are dedicated to finding ways to remain as Australian as possible and vouch to only release products of the highest quality.

How is the collagen extracted?

Collagen in its raw form needs to be broken down into smaller units in order to be absorbed and processed by the body. This form of collagen is called hydrolysed collagen (also referred to as collagen peptides or collagen hydrolysate) and is the result of a process called hydrolysis. Our collagen undergoes the hydrolysis process in America and is then sent back to us in its final form.

What are the benefits of native Australian botanicals?

Native Australian botanicals have huge significance in indigneous culture and have been used for medicinal, healing and ceremonial purposes for thousands of years. More recently, their benefits have been backed by science. Due to Australia being geographically isolated from the rest of the world and faced with challenging growing conditions, our native botanicals have supercharged themselves with high levels of antioxidants and vitamins in order to not only survive but thrive. When it comes to beauty, native botanicals deliver results - naturally. Active ingredients transform the skin at a cellular level and, because botanicals are derived straight from the source - the ground beneath us - they don’t require human intervention to be effective. Incredible antioxidant properties give these powerful plants the ability to fight the signs of ageing caused by free radicals and oxidative stress. They also provide a delicate yet sophisticated aroma and taste.

Where are the native Australian botanicals sourced?

Our formulations hero locally grown native botanicals, sourced directly from predominantly indigenous producers. We selectively work with suppliers based on their sustainable farming and grazing practices which help to regenerate the land and reverse climate change. By turning our attention to the abundance of Australia, we support the local economy and have full transparency over our supply chain.

Why not organic?

The simple answer is we weren’t able to find someone local who could supply bovine collagen with organic certification. In all honesty it was unexpectedly difficult to find someone local who was able to supply the bovine collagen as is (most collagen brands source their product off-shore), let alone an Australian collagen supplier who also came with organic certification. Knowing where our product comes from is of utmost importance. We are comfortable having transparency over the supply chain and knowing that our bovine collagen comes from pasture-raised and grass-fed Australian cattle. The cattle are kosher certified, which means they have been managed in a very strict manner according to global best practice. While not organic by the technical definition, it’s very close and something we will strive towards in the future.

What is By Beth’sresearch in the body actually being able to absorb the collagen and convert tobe utilised by the body?

‘Native collagen’ is found in bones, skin and connective tissue of animals (i.e. cattle, pigs and fish). As a protein and long-chain amino acid, native collagen is not easily digested by the body. In order to be absorbed, it must be broken down into shorter chains through a process called hydrolysis. These shorter chains are interchangeably referred to as collagen peptides or hydrolysed collagen.

Research shows that due to its low molecular weight, hydrolysed collagen is highly digestible, absorbed and distributed in the different tissues of the human body. Hydrolysed collagen is shown to reach the deeper layers of the skin and improves skin physiology and appearance increasing hydration, elasticity, firmness, wrinkle reduction, and skin rejuvenation.

According to the Open Nutraceuticals Journal, when you ingest hydrolysed collagen its first destination is the small intestine where it is absorbed into the bloodstream in the form of small collagen peptides and free amino acids. Through your network of blood vessels, these collagen peptides and free amino acids are then distributed throughout the body, in particular to the dermis (the layer of skin that lies below the epidermis), where it has been proven they can remain up to 14 days.

Hydrolysed collagen acts in two different ways in the dermis:

1. It provides the building blocks for the formation of collagen. Free amino acids provide building blocks for the formation of collagen and elastin fibres.

2. It stimulates the production of new collagen. Collagen oligopeptides act as ligands, binding to receptors present on the fibroblasts’ membrane to stimulate the production of new collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid.
